Katie Holmes Online
Biography

Katie Holmes was born Kate Noelle Holmes on December 18, 1978, in Toledo, Ohio. The youngest of five children, Holmes was raised in a tight-knit Roman Catholic household. Her father worked as a divorce attorney. “I always joke that my happy childhood was the result of other people’s unhappiness,” the actress later told Allure magazine. A straight-A student at an all-girls’ school, Holmes participated in several extracurricular activities, most notably acting.

Holmes knew from a young age that she wanted to be an actress. While still in high school, she traveled to New York City for a modeling competition. Holmes was 17 years old when she and her mother went to Los Angeles, California, for six weeks to audition. Her first big break came with a role in Ang Lee’s film The Ice Storm (1998).

Holmes first achieved fame for her performance as Joey Potter on The WB teen drama Dawson’s Creek, which debuted in 1998. She and the rest of the series’ cast, including James Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams, quickly became popular television stars.

Over Dawson’s Creek’s run, Holmes worked to show audiences that she was more than just the “cute girl next door.” She took on challenging film roles in Wonder Boys and The Gift (both released in 2000). In Wonder Boys, Holmes plays a college student who has an amorous interest in her professor (Michael Douglas). She portrays a different type of temptress in The Gift. Not long after those film appearances, the actress starred in the 2003 independent comedy Pieces of April.

Holmes continued to seek out a range of acting roles after Dawson’s Creek ended in 2003. In the big-budget action film Batman Begins (2005), she starred opposite Christian Bale, who appeared in the title role. Around this same time, Holmes made headlines for her personal life, as media outlets began reporting that she’d begun dating popular actor Tom Cruise.

Katie Holmes’s and Tom Cruise’s relationship quickly became popular tabloid fodder, with reports covering nearly every move made by the famous couple. The pair got engaged two months after they met in 2005. The following April, they welcomed their only child together, daughter Suri. Holmes and Cruise wed later that year, in November 2006, at a castle in Italy.

After taking some time off, Holmes returned to acting. She made her Broadway debut in 2008, appearing in a revival of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, which also featured John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest and Patrick Wilson. On the big screen, she starred in The Romantics with Anna Paquin and Josh Duhamel in 2010, also serving as an executive producer on the project.

While married to Cruise, Holmes’s career was overshadowed by their relationship. Their union, however, came to crashing halt in June 2012: After five years of marriage, Holmes filed for divorce and moved to New York City with daughter Suri. Some reports speculated that Cruise’s religion, Scientology, had played a role in their split.

Since her divorce, Holmes has worked to establish her own identity, independent of her famous former spouse. She returned to Broadway for a role in Dead Accounts in late 2012. The following year, she debuted as the face of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. Holmes was cast in several film projects around this same time, including the science-fiction drama The Giver (2014) with Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges.

In addition to acting and producing, Holmes runs her own fashion line, Holmes & Yang, which she launched with Jeanne Yang in 2009.
